On Thursday, Brad Pitt sat down with Ann Curry for an interview on the Today Show to promote his charity, “Make it Right.” The charity is focused on building new environmentally friendly homes in New Orleans 9th ward which had been devastated after Hurricane Katrina.
Curry asked Pitt about whether he would consider a possible run. Pitt did not seem interested. As a way of showing his disinterest he told Curry what his platform would be,
“I'm running on the gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform. I don't have a chance." In other words, he doesn’t think that even though he has put so much effort into saving the city, that an atheist could get elected.
While I have no doubt that Pitt is not interested in running for office, I do think it is a sad state of affairs that Pitt is discouraged from doing so because he believes that atheists can’t win. Pitt isn’t alone in this view of the political climate in America. Many promising young people who have a strong interest in political office are being discouraged from running because they are rational people who lack belief in gods. Some atheists may run for office, but they will almost certainly hide their lack of belief when they do.
Atheists shouldn’t have to hide the fact that they don’t believe in imaginary beings if they want to run for office. We shouldn’t concede the political landscape to the Anna Falling’s of the nation. If people like her and Sarah Palin can run for offices with God on their side, than surely Brad Pitt can run for Mayor with reason on his side. He is actually helping to re-build a large section of the city and is doing so in an environmentally and energy conscious manner.
Let’s help convince Brad Pitt to run for Mayor on the gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform. Let’s give him the chance! Sign the Ipetition.
