While today America celebrates our independence from Great Britain, we remain depend to religious leaders and religious doctrine. The United States is not only one of the most religious nations in the world; we also have large numbers of fundamentalist religious extremists.

Our government is held hostage by religious leaders and mega-churches continue to organize their followers to push legislators to present and support anti-science, anti-secular, and anti-American laws. Fundamentalist extremists wage massive letter writing campaigns and protests to influence politics from school boards to the Presidency.

Even President Obama, who is much more supportive of the separation of church and state than his predecessor, must occasionally play lip-service to these fundamentalist religious extremists. While our leaders are dependent on the whims of these religious fundamentalist, these people are dependant on their religious leaders to interpret their twisted doctrine for them.

On this Independence Day, we should all strive to free ourselves and our nation from the tyranny of religious fundamentalism and religious dogmatism. Let us think independently and use our common sense to cast off the shackles of ignorance.
