Two thirds of teenagers don't believe in God… in England. I wish that were true in America, but I guess we just have to settle for over one third of young people not going to church.
According to a Penguin Books survey of over one thousand teens from ages 13 to 18 within the United Kingdom, not only do two thirds lack the belief in a deity, but 59% claim that religion has a negative effect on the world. 47% of those surveyed claim that “organized religion has no place in the world.”
While in America the chief theistic religion is hands down Christianity, England and many other European nations have a much larger Muslim population. So teens in Great Britain have to endure the competition between the Christian majority and the large growing number of Muslims. That may be one of the reasons why religion has such high negative numbers, but that is just speculation. It could be that both Christian and Muslim fundamentalists tend to be anti-gay, anti-science, anti-modernity, anti-women, and a host of other negatives associations.
Surely, such a lack of faith and such a negative attitude toward religion in general should also be reflected in the morals of these teens, right? So many Christian Evangelicals here in America claim that without there god there can be no morality. If that view held true, than we should expect to see these British teens to be self-absorbed brats who only care about themselves. However, the survey discovered the opposite to be the case. 90 percent of those surveyed believe that they should treat other people better than they treat themselves, trumping the “Golden Rule.” Maybe America can still learn something from our fatherland after all.
