Is Christianity good for the world? Journalist, author, and famed atheist Christopher Hitchens and author, professor, pastor, and evangelical theologian Douglas Wilson debate the issue.
Hitchens is known for his outspoken candor on the issue. His most famous book dealing with religion was called, “God is Not Great: How Religious Poisons Everything.” So it goes without saying that he is pretty convinced that Christianity is not good for the world. One of the so called atheist four horsemen, Hitchens is often referred to as more of a pit-bull. When he goes of religious right radio and TV, he doesn’t just sit by while the host is on the attack. Instead, he will call the host out mid-sentence.
Wilson is no passive opponent however. He is as fundamentalist as they come. His most controversial work was a pamphlet called, “Southern Slavery, As It Was” which argued in support for Biblical slavery in an attempt to distance it from southern slavery. Many of Wilson’s other books deal with gender roles in the family complete with Biblical support. Of course, he also had this to say in an interview with Christianity Today:

“You can’t apply Scripture woodenly. You might exile some homosexuals, depending on the circumstances and the age of the victim. There are circumstances where I’d be in favor of execution for adultery…. I’m not proposing legislation. All I’m doing is refusing to apologize for certain parts of the Bible.”
Wilson will of course be arguing that Christianity is good for the world. Surprisingly, Wilson and Hitchens get along quite well as friends when they are not debating each other and calling each other immoral. The unlikely duo have been on a promotion tour for the DVD with is available through Amazon.com on October, 27th.
