One of the biggest criticisms that religious people make toward atheism is that atheists aren’t charitable people. Aside from not being factually true it is also misleading. For starters, atheism isn’t a religion. So in the past atheists didn’t go around telling people that they were atheists. In other words, they weren’t helping others in the name of atheism.

But the landscape has changed. Now atheist groups are forming around the nation as a response to the overly religious and superstitious atmosphere that exists in America today. Aside from uniting around a lack of belief in god or gods, many atheist groups are also uniting around the ideals of reason and the principles of humanism these new atheist groups are looking to show that we can be good without God.

With this in mind, Atheist Volunteers started to organize various atheist groups to volunteer for various services. The Austin Atheists recently took part in the handing out toiletries to the homeless. They reasoned that there are already many groups giving out food but so no groups were filling other needs. So they decided to fill the toiletry need.

The Beltway Atheists
volunteered at the Capitol Area Food Bank in Washington D.C and the various groups of PhillyCoR (Philadelphia Coalition of Reason) teamed up with church groups to volunteer with the Philabundance hunger relief program.

As more and more atheist groups start to organize, America will start to see people volunteering their time, money, and energy in the name of atheism. But we are just starting to organize into groups. Religion has a few thousand years head start and they often feel the need to push their religious beliefs on those they help.
