Prosecutors say that, for seven years, Rosemary Altea’s bookkeeper funneled somewhere between $120,000 to $200,000 to her own accounts. Vermont resident Denise Hall may be sentenced to up to twenty years in prison for the schemes, which went unnoticed by the psychic, who describes herself as an “internationally renowned spiritual medium.”
Altea has published several books on psychic gifts, publishing the first book on the advice of her spirit guide, Grey Eagle. She has appeared on Larry King Live, Oprah, and a national primetime news magazine, and she has created two spiritual healing foundations, one in Vermont and one in England.
Not surprisingly, many skeptics are not convinced by her claims. In an episode of their cable TV show, Penn and Teller examined Altea’s approach to psychic readings and caught her cheating.
She has also failed to collect a million dollar prize available from the James Randi Educational Foundation for anyone demonstrating legitimate paranormal ability.
And now, for seven years, Grey Eagle and all of Altea’s other spiritual contacts left her in the dark about the fact that her own bookkeeper was defrauding her.
In one appearance on Larry King Live, Altea defended the psychic medium industry, saying that “we all know that in every industry there are people who claim to be more qualified than they are.”
