Millions of music lovers around the world were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Michael Jackson. Jackson was hospitalized after going into cardiac arrest and died at approximately 2:26 p.m., Thursday.

At press time, the actual cause of death is pending autopsy results. Celebrity site TMZ.com was the first to deliver the news. Other major media outlets soon followed.

The headlines seemed surreal: “Superstar Michael Jackson dead at age 50.”  Fans hoped it was only a rumor pushed by overzealous gossip hounds. An official statement from Michael’s elder brother Jermaine confirmed the worst: the King of Pop was gone.

Despite much speculation on his future and the scandals that plagued his latter years, the impact of the megastar on music and culture around the globe is immeasurable.

Members of the hip-hop community shared what his legacy means to them.

“As I look back on the work that Michael Jackson did, I realize how much responsibility I have as an artist to impact the world. His motivation was for the music, dance, and love for the world....May he rest in peace and live forever.”

- B.o.B a.k.a Bobby Ray, artist, Grand Hustle/Atlantic

“I feel like it’s a tragedy. He was one of the most important people in the music, period. It’s almost like [calling him] the King of Pop was an understatement. I heard he sold 750 million records in his career since the Jackson 5. Your could almost give a record to everybody in the country.”

- Big Sean, artist, Def Jam/G.O.O.D

“First and foremost, the death of Michael Jackson is devastating. You can’t get past the imprint of his music. I hope people remember him for his legacy. It’s a blessing that I’ve been in his presence through his music, though I’ve never met him personally or seen him in concert. Losing Michael Jackson is like losing a part of music.”

- Jeron Ward, producer, Royal Flush Entertainment
