LucasArts unveils their new MMO
LucasArts and BioWare officially announced the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic today.
Here's just a quick recap of some details about the upcoming MMO:
- The Old Republic takes place 300 years after the events of the original Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) RPG games -- which is about 3,600 years before the events of the films.
- It will feature new type of story telling as yet unseen in MMOs. You'll be able to have NPC companions, who will interact with you similar to how they interact in the single player KOTOR games.
- There will be two factions: the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, and each faction will have their own classes.
- Each class has its own backstory and branching storylines, and player's choices will permanently open and close storyline options.
- The Sith will be more empathetic and compelling, and not just 'the bad guys'. Their ideas may run counter to the Galactic Republic, but that doesn't mean they're all evil, lightning-spewing pug-ugly Dark Jedi.
- It won't be replacing Star Wars Galaxies
- There is no launch date. Late 2009 seems the best optimistic guess, and sometime in 2010 seems more likely.
