Tales of Monkey Island chapter 4 -- titled The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood -- is quite possibly the funniest, most surprising, and trickiest chapter in the series yet.
The basic game hasn't changed any, but the puzzles this time around are slightly more difficult than previous chapters. You may find yourself digging a little deeper to solve the game's puzzles, but none ever felt fist-shaking difficult.
In addition, The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood definitely pulls some surprising twists and tugs more at the emotional heartstrings. It is a very fitting pre-climax that will leave you anxiously awaiting the final installment, The Rise of the Pirate God.
But don't let this leave you thinking that there still isn't plenty of trademark Monkey Island humor in this chapter.Despite being the most emotionally 'heavy' episode in the series yet, it may be the funniest.
The episode begins with Guybrush Threepwood dragged before the Pirate Court, facing a litany of charges leveled by Stan! -- the hyper-gesticulating salesman in an oddly eye-bending jacket.
I won't spoil any surprises, but a number of twists and revelations come to light in this chapter, and all we can surmise is that not everything is as it seems -- but we probably won't know the truth of the big picture until the end of the final chapter.
If you're a fan of Monkey Island, do yourself a favor and pick up Tales of Monkey Island if you haven't already. If you're just an adventure game fan sitting on the sidelines, then now is the perfect time to pick up the first four chapters of this excellent series -- odds are by the time you've played through them, the fifth and final episode -- Rise of the Pirate God -- will be available.
