Legendary is an A-grade game idea that is, unfortunately, mostly ruined by C-grade execution.
Many of its flaws would be forgivable if the gameplay held its own -- but it didn't. The action just never felt tense or thrilling enough to elicit much more than yawn -- whereas triple-A shooters like FEAR, Crysis, Left 4 Dead, and others will have you raving about your experience to fellow gamers over the water cooler at work.
Here's the break down:
The Good
- It's a cool idea, as are a lot of the monsters such as the Minotaur and Gryphon.
The Bad
- The story, writing, and voice acting are all poor to mediocre at best
- The guns sound like toys.
- The AI isn't particularly bright.
- The animation, graphics, and visuals in general aren't even up to par with the four-year-old Half-Life 2, and certainly nowhere near the likes of Crysis and other modern FPS games.
- Silly clipping problems; monsters die and fall through walls, for example.
- Movement is clunky.
- The game forces you along severely linear, scripted path. You can't jump where you aren't supposed to, or even open doors (unless you're supposed to)
- Many uninspired locate-the-switch type missions.
The Ugly
- Console-based checkpoint save game system.
Overall
- A great idea that suffers from poor execution. If you're out of games and wait for this one to hit bargain bin prices ($10), it might be worth picking up. That's about the best I could say for it.
