The folks that created the total conversion Mod Age of Chivalry were nice enough to give me an interview. Learn about the team, their inspirations, what's on the horizon, and even a little advice for budding mod-makers.
So, just who the heck are you guys?
Team Chivalry is made up of members from all over the world, North America, Europe and Australia. We are the creators of Age of Chivalry, a completely free Online First Person Medieval Combat game that allows you experience the glory and brutality of the middle ages first hand - you also get to use that hand to deliver some carnage of your own.
What inspired you to make AoC?
We first started the project because of our shared passion for the medieval era and video games. We felt there was a gap left by the professional gaming industry and decided that we would fill it ourselves and create the game of our dreams. We also wanted to be able to challenge our friends to epic sword duels to see who was the best warrior, but real weapons hurt too much.

How many people were involved with making Age of Chivalry?
There have been a lot of people involved with making Age of Chivalry, but most come and go, currently there are just over 10 members in active development.
How long did it take to make AoC ready for release?
Development began as far back as 2004, we had our first public beta released in June of last year and we continue to develop and update the game very regularly.
What kind of tools and software do you use to make a full conversion like AoC?
Visual Studio, 3DS Max, Source SDK, Valve Hammer Editor, Tortoise SVN, HLMV and several others.
If I wanted to make a serious mod or total conversion for a game, what advice would you offer?
Pick something new and interesting, choose an era or have key features that aren't already available in the professional industry. In today's world, if your not doing something new or unique, your not going to be doing it much longer.
Would you characterize AoC as 'fantasy' or 'alternative history or a bit of both?

The game is considered "Realistic Fantasy", meaning that while we try to attain realism as much as possible, sometimes "Hollywoodizing" things is in the best interest of the gameplay. It is important to note however, that no magic will ever be part of AoC.
Why aren't they're any elves, magic, monsters, etc.?
Because elves are too polite and graceful for the desperate and ruthless world we are trying to portray. The medieval era, although often romanticized was truly a time of cruelness and oppression. We believe we can make our game interesting and enjoyable without taking the far over used route of adding mythical creatures or beasts.
How can the community contribute to AoC to make it better?
We would invite all of the community to join us on our forums and help us develop the game of your dreams too! I can't imagine how different (and worse!) the game would be today if it weren't for the input of our forum members over the years, we actually read your ideas and we take them seriously. Additionally, if players feel a true desire to give back to the team, they may make a donation to us via the paypal button found on our homepage.
Are you planning any additions, expansions, factions, etc? What does the near future hold? What about the long-term future?
Of course, Age of Chivalry is in active development, there will always be new things coming. The near future will see a large content update that we aim to have feature new maps(and new game modes), Achievements, Stats, a "Title"(rank) system, far more advanced hit detection, Sound overhaul and several other additions that will allow players to get even more enjoyment out of the game. As for long-term, our fans will instruct us what our plans are once we get closer and I'll get back to you.Horses and mounted combat has always been something we've wanted to do, so it may make its way into the game down the road still.
You've got beheadings covered – will we be able to hack off limbs too?
Hacking limbs is a feature that has often been brought up by our community, we've certainly considered it and it may end up in the game in some form down the road. Whether its the addition of this feature or another, it's safe to assume more gore and brutality are headed your way.
