Arguably one of the biggest track and field events in the Sacramento area commences today at Folsom Stadium next to Folsom High School, as the adidas Golden West Invitational marks its 50th year of showcasing the best high school track and field athletes in the nation.
To even earn an invite to the prestigious meet, athletes must successfully meet event standards throughout their high school track seasons -- times for runners to beat in their events, and distances for field event athletes to surpass in theirs.
As if battling for the top places in the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships weren't tough enough for athletes the week before, they've now got to prove themselves against the invited from across the country, including several national record holders in various events.
It's not easy for the athletes, but sure is fun for the fans.
The stadium will be packed with fans, friends, family, coaches and college scouts. Sacramento area athletes should have somewhat of a homefield advantage, but when you're going against the fastest sprinter in the nation, nothing but a near-perfect effort is going to make the difference.
According to the Golden West organizers, "past participantes have represented the United States in every Olympic Games since 1964 and have filled more than 150 positions on the American Olympic Track and Field teams. They have won more than 75 medals, 40 of them gold."
Several freshman only events have been added recently, allowing many more local youngsters showcase their stuff on a national stage.
Overall, technically there will be 70 local competitors in the Golden West Invitational in various events, although several are repeat athletes competing in multiple events.
The bottom line: There are opportunities for our Sacramento area athletes to not only compete against some of the best in America, but beat them. We'll find out tonight...
