So Tuesdays have been designated by me (because hey, I'm The Decider) as Video Pick of the Week Day. And this one's a doozy. Actually, it's the first in a series, and you won't want to miss any of them.
"Michael Caine on Film Acting" was a program broadcast on British television in 1987 in conjunction with the publication of his seminal book, Acting in Film: An Actor’s Take on Movie Making (now revised, expanded and available on Amazon). Miraculously, the whole video has been remastered (or whatever it's called when those awesome tech people fix videos to keep them from delaying and screwing up) and posted on You Tube in several 10-minute installments. One more reason to be glad you're living in this century.
Warning: you will get hooked by this series. It's fascinating (and not just because of the '80s hair styles and incredibly young versions of now-famous actors). But because it's so freaking smart and useful! Caine gives great advice about avoiding sneaky technical pitfalls, making every shot work optimally and shrewdly giving you (and your character) every advantage when acting for the camera.
Here's the first episode. You can find the rest of the series on You Tube. Look for the ones that have the addendum: NO DELAY.
OK, ready? Here's what to do: call in sick to the day job (if you're lucky enough to have one), make some popcorn, dig in and enjoy. And next Tuesday, watch out for another great video find.
You're welcome.
