Feeling the back to school blues? Mourning summer's end? Shake it off and drown those sorrows with some food on a stick, a cool beverage, and plenty of fun in the sun, and you're sure to at least send summer out with a bang this Labor Day.
Denver's Taste of Colorado is a Labor Day tradition. In fact, it's been going strong now since 1984. Locals and tourists alike flock to Capitol Hill to play in the sun, jam out to a wide variety of live music, and, of course, sample some of the tastiest festival eats this side of the Rocky Mountains.
A great time for everyone in the family, the festival runs from Friday, September 4th all the way through Monday, September 7th. Some highlights of 2009's Taste of Colorado include:
Music: With four stages from which to choose, "The Taste" is bound to have scheduled a performance to suit your musical taste. Some of the more popular concerts will perform Saturday on the main stage. Cherry Poppin' Daddies take the stage at 1:00, and Robert Cray performs at 7:30. For a complete performance list, check out the four different stages' concert schedules.
Arts & Crafts: If you like yourself some arts and crafts, you'll have plenty of options at Taste of Colorado. Hundreds of vendors will be selling their wares for your shopping pleasure. There are really too many to name, but here are some of last year's winners.
Family Fun: Holy family entertainment, Batman! Actually, Spiderman was in attendance at last year's Taste of Colorado (he was poised and ready for pictures, to boot!), but the point is that your kiddos will not be disappointed with Taste of Colorado. In fact, you might have a difficult time steering them clear of the carnival rides and other activities. A separate entertainment stage promises plenty of family-friendly fun, and there's even a small play area for the littlest ones.
Food, Food, and More Food: Among all the other treats at "The Taste," it's sometimes easy to forget that the festival is, in fact, about the food. Relatively new to the festival is a fine dining area with restaurants such as The Broker and The Cork House Wine Restaurant. But don't worry too much--all stuffiness aside, your traditional turkey legs and other fine foods on a stick will be there as always. Don't forget to leave room for dessert, too. Dreyer's Ice Cream features a daily ice cream eating contest. Read the complete restaurant vendor list discover more foodie finds here.
Before You Go, Be in the Know: Avoid festival ATM surcharges and lines, and hit the ATM before you attend the festival as food vendors and carnival booths accept tickets that must be purchased with cash. Make sure to explore your parking options so street closures don't leave you stumped. Wear comfy clothes and bring layers if you plan to extend your celebrating into the evening hours. Don't forget the sunscreen, and, last, but not least, please leave your furry friends at home. The Taste of Colorado can often be quite hot and crowded, and the staff is very strict about not allowing pets into the festival. Of course, service animals are allowed. Most of all, have a happy and safe Labor Day 2009!
