In their own words: The Gold Diggers
What are your musical goals or aspirations?
We love to play live and great songwriting is a must. We're all sidemen in other bands around town and The GoldDiggers gives us a chance to step out on our own and rip it up playing roots music. The band is tight but the vibe is loose so we're never really sure what's going to happen next. It's the kind of thing that keeps the audience on their toes - and us too!
We go for a big sound wihile keeping the volume under control and have lots of instruments in the mix. We're a 6-piece band that features honky-tonk piano, lead guitar pickin', lap steel, accordion, mandolin, and a tight, swinging rhythm section.
What is your musical history?
We've all played together in a number of different projects so when the time was right to put together a killer band I humbly asked some of my favorite guys to join me and luckily they said yes. I love upbeat alt-country/rockabilly music and wanted a band that could tear the roof off the place and feature great songwriting at the same time. I started plotting out the songs with my pal Dylan Orlando as 2007 was winding down and then we played a couple gigs and really busted onto the scene in 2008. We play original songs by the band and our songwriter friends and also slip in some lesser-known nuggets by our some of our favorite artists.
Who or what are your influences and inspirations?
The guys in the band have a pretty wide range of musical interests but there's a lot of common ground. Some of our favorites are Joe Ely, Dave Alvin, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters, Dave Edmunds, the Stones, and Jake Hanna. We have such a great time playing together that we inspire each other.
Where have you played?
We're currently featured on Comcast on Demand and have played on KPIG radio. Recent club dates include The Starry Plough, El Rio, and Thee Parkside, with great local roots bands like 77 El Deora, The Robber Barons, and Axton Kincaid.
We've got two great shows coming up this week - Thursday, Septmeber 10 at Peri's Silver Dollar Bar in Fairfax where we play all night long - and Friday, September 11 at the Make-Out Room in the Mission where we open an early show at 7:30pm for local twang favorites Starlene.
...Anything else you want the reader to know?
Keep checking us out because this band is a work-in-progress, always flying by the seat of our pants...it's not unusual for us to play a song live that we've never played before, maybe something one of us heard on the car radio on the way to the gig, or something your daddy played on the record player when you were a boy...you never know what'll pop up at a GoldDiggers.
As always, support the bay area music scene. Peace.
