It has required eighteen long years but finally the Petruzzelli theatre in Bari has reopened to its devoted public. The destruction that had taken place in the most important town of the region Puglie had been caused by an unforgiving fire that had left only the option to rebuild completely this Italian temple of the lyrical music and after almost two decades the charred theatre has resurrected from its ashes like the mythical Phoenix. A magnificent inaugural concert starting at six thirty P.M. on October 4 and directed by Maestro Fabio Mastrangelo has reopened officially the theater’s activities with the Ninth Symphony by Beethoven, performed by the Orchestra of the Province of Bari and by the Choir of the Petruzzelli Foundation, the was directed by Franco Sebastiani. Among the prestigious artists the tenor Stig Andersen, the soprano Veronica Dzhioeva, the  mezzo-soprano Sara Allegretta, and the bass Mikhail Kazakov. A decision that has certainly symbolized how the resurrected theatre located in Bari belongs to its people has been represented by the fact that concert has been repeated on Monday October 5 with a performance reserved as a symbol of gratitude to the people who have worked to bring back the Petruzzelli theatre to its originary beauty and to twelve hundred inhabitants of Bari who have won a sweepstake meant to give everyone in town a chance to be part of this much awaited historical event. In order also not to deprive anybody in town of the possibility to enjoy the reopening of this important theatre its Foundation has provided a gigantic screen that has offered the concert to all those who have not been favored by the sweepstake. The great attention that has surrounded this particularly meaningful musical event provides a clear evidence of how much classical music is still loved and followed nowadays in Italy.
