Water sustains all life. Without it we would be nothing. The average person can go 2 weeks without eating, but cannot go any longer than 2 days without water. Let’s face it, we need it!
Recently, in the city of Wichita, the water department has suggested raising our water bill. Here are the options.
I have some problems with this. First, of all I don’t mind them raising our bill for up grades. We are a growing city. The more people that move in the more water will be in demand. That makes sense. The faster, the safer, the healthier our water is the better it is for us. The real issue I have with it is the reason that the water department stated for having to raise the water rates. It is because they had “a rainy spring”. Because the weather was too “rainy” they lost money. I just want to tell them to “Suck it up”. Businesses across the board have been losing money hand over fist. You don’t see them demanding to raise their prices. (Have you see how cheap McDonalds, Wendy’s, Sonic, Quizno’s, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza Hut have became lately? They know how to customers in their restaurants in this bad economy!) To me it doesn’t seem fair. Since they are basically a monopoly I guess they can charge whatever they want and get away with it. It is not like they are like phone companies or cable companies trying to bargain your attention to them.
Was it just me or did we have two solid weeks where they temperature was above 100? Have the people that have to make the decision about raising the water rates been living in a cave or something or did they not see the sprinklers running 24/7 like I did ? With all the green yards abounding in Wichita I don’t think home owners where holding back on water. I would think that the two weeks of the “heat wave” would have made up for the “rainy spring”.
Personally I prefer the plan that prorates the price per usage than raising it overall. A launder mat would use a heck of a lot more water than someone in a single dwelling. Someone in an apartment would use a lot less water than someone living in a house with a yard to water. Why should some one who lives in an apartment and doesn’t have to worry about watering their front yard have to pay for the launder mats usage of water? Just something to think about.
