A picture of John Brown as dicpicted in the Capital Building.

At one point and time John Brown was a driving force in Kansas between the years of 1854-1858. He led an attack on Harper’s Ferry trying to make Kansas a free state from slavery. John Brown planned an unsuccessful attack on Harper’s Ferry on Oct. 16, 1859. Although Kansas became a free state on Jan. 29th 1861 John Brown didn’t live to see it. When the Revolutionary war broke out “John Brown’s Body” was a famous Union marching song.

So what does John Brown have to do with Wichita in 2009 you may ask? The man had passion! He may of has some violent means and not exactly the way I would of approve of executing them, but he did have a burning desire to make the world a better place. He understood that there was more to life than getting up, going to work, eating, watching TV, and going back to bed. He knew if he put his mind to it he could achieve great things. No only did he, himself has a passion for making Kansas a “free” state he also got others to join his cause.

So let me ask you; are you living a passion filled life? Are you doing more than just eating, exercising, working, watching TV and going to bed? Are you just living a life for yourself? If you are my friends you are missing out on so much!

The great thing about helping others is that you find out more about yourself than you ever could alone. You find out how others appreciate your strengths and gently learn about your weaknesses. You learn to feel grateful for the life, materials and the goals you have achieved in your life so far. It just feels just plain good to help others.

In Wichita there are so many different organizations that could use your assistance right now. I swear there is an organization out there that could benefit from any talent you possess. If gardening is your thing you can always volunteer at the Botanical gardens. If you enjoy working with children you can always become involved with Make a Wish Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, or Communities in Schools. If you enjoy working with animals you could become a part of PALS, or volunteer at the new humane society, or train your dog to be a therapy dog or a search and rescue dog. If you enjoy working the elderly you can help out with meals on wheels or volunteer at nursing homes. If you are concerned about the homeless you can always donate or volunteer at a homeless shelter or help out with a churches food bank. If you are concerned about the environment just before the River Fest there is an organized river clean-up. Like, I said there is a nitch out there for everyone. All you have to do is to look and not very far and your services will be handy.

I was raised “if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything”. I find that very true when it comes to volunteer work. If you don’t get out there and help others what would your life be worth? If you don’t get out and assist how you can know what your talents are? Wouldn’t you be comforted knowing that you were put here on this earth more than to turn oxygen to carbon dioxide. Who knows may you will do such good work that they will remember you by a song also.
