VNA Rummage sale tent
The first week of May brings not only flowers and the Kentucky Derby--out in Far Hills, New Jersey that means it's time for the semi-annual VNA rummage sale. This huge event covers 75,000 square feet of tent-covered fields, where white-topped enclosures host a bevy of bargains. For three days, over ten thousand people will sort through pots and pans, kids toys and books, clothing, drapes, bicycles, fixtures and an eclectic assortment of donated goods.
The Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills has held this sale for years and it has earned a reputation as a bargain hunter's delight. For one thing, donations come from families in the wealthy towns of Far Hills, Bernardsville, Peapack-Gladstone and Bernards Township. Therefore there is always the chance that you can pick up a Coach bag or a boutique dress for a tenth of the original price.
One secret of it's success is the fact that workers at the sale put items in separate categories. So one tent may host children's books and toys and another might be devoted to eletrical appliances. No credit cards are accepted but cash and checks (with proper identification) will be taken. There is an ATM machine nearby for those who need a quick infusion of cash.
