Longwood Gardens

When you enter Longwood Gardens you are drawn toward the magnificent conservatories with their Victorian look. Looking down from the conservatories you can see the nozzles for the display fountains that create such a beautiful light, sound and water extravaganzas during the summer as well as the Christmas season. But in any season the spotlight is on the magnificent main courtyard with its seasonal plantings and hanging baskets. During the fall this area is dominated by thousands of yellow mums hanging in baskets or formed into designs. In spring the courtyard is covered with tulips and other colorful flowers.

All year round, the conservatories have rooms for perusing. One convenience is the Audio Wand, available near the entrance of the building. Using this wand you can walk through the Fern Passage, take in the Silver Garden with its cereus, cacti and other plants of harsh climates, pass by the colorful Mediterranean garden, and have two hours worth of information at your ear. A popular stop is the indoor orchid room with its profusion of plants that range from the fat, purple “prom” orchids to tiny flowers that sprout along a branch. And the indoor children’s garden has plenty of room for the kids to wander through mazes and look at special plantings.

The walkways in the conservatory are wide enough that patrons can use mobility scooters or wheelchairs to get to most areas. These can be rented at the Visitor Center although there is a limited supply.
