When it comes to October the farms and farm markets in New Jersey turn to tourism big time. This densely populated state still has a few operating farms and orchards left. So what better way to show both city and suburban kids that vegetables like pumpkins and squash grow on the ground and apples grow on trees than to take them to a spooked up farm. Mazes made of hay bales or corn (if there’s still any left) scary looking scarecrows and jugs of apple cider for the grownups are the order of the day. Here are a few of the
Peaceful Valley Orchards. Simple farm activities with pick your own pumpkins and a hay bale maze and of course hayrides. Some special entertainments on weekends through October 25. Located at 150 Pittstown Road, Pittstown, NJ Take Route 78 to Exit 15. The farm is 2 miles down the road. Telephone: 908-730-7748. www.peacefulvalleyorchards.com
Schaefer’s Farm has a double dip into the Halloween spirit. During the daytime on weekends there are free hayrides with the purchase of a pumpkin, an animal enclosure and a corn maze. All this meant for families with young kids. Check:.www.schaeferfarm.com . Then at night things take different turn. Schaefer’s Frightfest is on tap every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until October 31.
This one is meant for older kids and adults. Walk through a nightmare maze, take a scary hayride and visit the Carnival of chaos. $20 per person. Location:1051 rte 523 (Flemington-Whitehouse Road. www.schaefersfrightfest.net .Telephone: 908-782-2705
Terhune’s Orchards. Located near Princeton, this is one of New Jersey’s most popular farm outings. For one thing there is a petting zoo of farm animals such as sheep and goats on hand all the time. For another, they make some pretty good apple cider and it is fresh pressed. Their cider doughnuts are also popular. The pies, however, are not made on premises. Since it can get pretty crowded here on October weekends, if you don’t care about the hayride try for a weekday. The apple-picking farm is actually a mile down the road. Located at 330 Cold Soil Road off of the Lawrenceville-Princeton Telephone: 609-924-2310. www.terhuneorchard.com

Wightman’s Farms. Although there’s a regular farm market here all year round with fresh produce and pies, this place causes a traffic jam on Route 202 just above Bernardsville during the month of October. Every weekend cars fill the parking lot and one across the street as the Halloween doings become bigger and bigger. This year there is not only the pumpkin picking and the hayrides but there are several different type mazes on hand. School and other groups can book for weekday excursions. Directions: Take Exit 30B from I-287, turn right at 202 N. The farm is about 1/3 mile on right. Telephone: 973-425-1727. www.wightmansfarm.com
