Grammy winner Larry Hart premiered his Concert of “Praise” in the South Point’s showroom on March 29 and now it will return for a second viewing on Sunday, July 12 at 2 p.m.
Hart bills his show as “An Irreverently Reverent GOSPEL Experience” because it’s not a traditional robe-wearing gospel event. You aren’t going to church. It’s a show that could someday go to Broadway since it seeks to entertain rather than preach. While all the songs are original, some are pure funny like “Big Hair,” where the country singer with a beehive-type hairdo belts out, “Big hair gets you closer to God.” Other song titles create humorous images including “Gonna Stomp My Prada for Jesus,” “Big” and “Pumps.” Hart says he seeks uplifting messages like the “sprit of gratitude” and “being grateful.”
This 90-minute, fully orchestrated non-secular musical has the very best singers including Hart and 45 “over-the-top” colorful costumes designed by Lorenzo Valentino and Michael Flach that are derived from vintage Escada, Chanel, Prada, Dior, Mackie and plenty of Ross Dress for Less.
This time the special guest will be Darcus Speed and six sensational experience singers including former Shirelle Diane Spann, ex-Rockette Marque, country dynamo Jennifer Weatherly, commercial and casino lounge singer Jeneane Marie, jazz vocalist Paris Red, who is a star in “Zumanity” at New York-New York, and Korean-American songstress Jenevi, who sings backup for Wayne Newton.
Hart’s mother, Tony Hart, who is a former gospel singer, will perform and even play the cowbells. When Hart was a child, his whole family traveled the world performing gospel music. Hart began singing at 2 and recorded his first family album at age 4.
Hart has many writing and performing credits to his name including winning a Grammy at age 19, but one project in particular is close to his heart. He wrote the book, music and lyrics for the musical “Sisterella,” which was executive produced and presented by Michael Jackson and Jerry Greenberg, produced by Robert DeNiro, Tribecca Films and Miramax, and won 16 NAACP Awards. Hart said, “I am the only composer on earth that Michael Jackson ever attached his name to a project that was not of his creation.” During “Praise,” Hart will pay tribute to Jackson and sing his favorite song from “Sisterella.”
“Praise” tickets with tax included are $25, $30, and $35; call the South Point box office at 702-797-8055 or 1-866-796-7111.
