Find out more about Nicole: A freelance writer for five years and Orlando resident for ten, Nicole has been a fan of the local music scene and the UCF Knights since before all the hoopla. She's also a fan of the word hoopla. With an obsession for pop culture and a penchant for anything with local flavor, checking out local bands while partaking in the happy hour specials is just one sacrifice she will make to keep you in the know. |

This middle of the week "weekend" has probably done you in. That one comfy spot on the couch is calling your name and you see no reason to get up, get out, or even tackle the task of taking down the Christmas tree. However, as your liver and your wallet recover there are a few things happening this weekend that may turn you into a mover and a shaker.
Didn't get what you wanted from Santa (or those relatives that don't share your interests)? Fear not, Ethos Vegan Kitchen has a little custom that may just help you out. Every month, the fine folks at Ethos host a little thing they like to call "Freecycling." Using the idea that "one man's trash is another man's treasure," this event is like a latter day version of the good 'ol swap meet. You bring whatever it is that you have and don't want and end up leaving with a new-to-you item. Since it's the holiday season, the theme this month is "Regifting Freecycle." You can bring that Chia Pet or other hideous present you received and swap it out for that little something special calling your name. Browse with caution because the rules at this party are "you touch it, you claim it."
With all the college football game match-ups happening this time of year, who woulda thought there would be any room left for a head to head match-up between Florida's two NBA teams? This Friday the Orlando Magic takes on the Miami Heat at the Amway Arena (7 pm). The Pistons may have gotten the better of them this past week but they're saving their best for the Heat. Come out and support Dwight and the guys at their first home game of 2009! Tickets range between $10-$160.
Sports and freecycling not enough to get you off the couch? Perhaps a little bit of art from two of Orlando's most talented is enough to get you out of the house? Friday night (7 pm) at Will's Pub, Lockdown Lowbrow Art is taking place featuring the works of Brett J. Barr (displaying works he created during six months of incarceration) and the equally talented Noah Howell. Because it's at Will's Pub and Will's always rocks, the music of Gargamel!, Apocalypse A-Go-Go, and Vegan Butcher will be the soundtrack to this night of fantastic art. The art reception is, free, all ages and is taking place from 7 pm-9pm. Doors for the concert open at 9 pm (21 and up, tickets $5).
Recover from your hangover today, lazy around the house, and make all those resolutions; maybe one of them should be participating in Orlando's art and entertainment scene more often- hint, hint.
Happy 2009!
