By now the tree has been trimmed and the lights have been hung. Everyone's waiting for the end of the week and the fun that next week has in store. And while it seems every channel has their own Christmas special or holiday montage, why not leave the house and enjoy all the holiday activities Orlando has to offer? Here are the top 5 things that will really get you in the spirit this weekend:
1) A Christmas Story at the Plaza Theatre( Bumby Ave)- All the dramatics of Ralphie and his wish to get the Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas are brought to life in this full length play. Narrated by Ian Petrella (Randy), the play features props from the movie and various elements including the "leg lamp." This is becoming a city favorite and is a great treat for fans of this classic holiday movie. Shows are on Thursdays and Fridays (730 pm), Saturdays (2pm and 730 pm), and Sundays (3 pm and 6 pm) and tickets are between $28-$33.
2)Toyland Charity Ball at Dragon Room (December 19)- Dress to impress at this charity ball. Bring a toy for a less fortunate child and receive a free drink and complimentary cover for your act of kindness. Many bars around town are offering incentives if people could come out and donate a small amount to those who cannot afford to have a Christmas. Take a little time out of your Friday night partying and do some good for someone else.
3) 'Tis the Season at the Orlando Science Center- This amazing show, featured in the Dr. Phillips CineDome, focuses on the holiday customs of many cultures. The show examines everything from holiday lights to gift giving, the evolution of St. Nicholas to Santa Claus, and the many different rituals practiced around the globe. With something for everyone, this show is a must see and a great way to learn or teach your family what this season is really all about.
4) Homegrown for the Holidays at Dandelion Communitea Cafe- This Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm, Homegrown for the Holidays Artisan Market and Winter Solstice Celebration presents the best in homegrown and handmade gifts. This is the Artisan Markets premiere in Orlando and will feature exclusively local artisan vendors with homegrown and handmade gift items, speakers and workshops, and activities for children. It's a great way for fans of going green to avoid the holiday craziness of the malls while enjoying the weather and peaceful atmosphere. This event is free and everyone is welcome.
5) Holiday Cookie Decorating Party at Infusion Tea- Although, technically, this event isn't happening until Monday (December 22 at 3 pm), it does require reservations and pre-payment so I can list it as a weekend activity. Regardless, this great idea from Infusion Tea includes 6 gingerbread cookies that you personally decorate, with your fabulous array of icings and your own paint brushes and a couple of Christmas stories told to you while you work on your manly masterpieces. This event cost $12, but that's a small price to put on the fun you will have.
