Majesco Entertainment - Go Play Circus Star

If you own a Wii, it's almost an unwritten rule to have a casual multiplayer game laying around that you can pick up and play with your friends and family and have some mindless fun.   To help fill that role, Majesco Entertainment, known for their awesome Cooking Mama games (and most recently Gardening Mama),  has released a new series of Wii-only family friendly games under the Go Play brand.  Go Play Circus Star is one of the first games in the Go Play series and players take to the stage as they try to wow the crowds with circus stunts and acts.

To start off, players choose one of the 6 circus stars to play as, which each have 5 different outfits through the entire game.  Up to 4 players can participate, but each player goes one at a time, not simultaneously.  Go Play Circus Star supports both the Wii remote as well as the Wii Balance Board, but for gamers who don't own a Wii Balance Board (that would be me!), you can still enjoy the game perfectly fine using just the Wii remote.

Go Play Circus Star offers 15 authentic circus events as well as 4 different venues and a training ground, which I highly recommend! Here is a full list of the circus acts:

  • Pie Dodging
  • Big Cat Taming
  • Human Cannonball
  • Elephant Balancing
  • Juggling Excitement
  • Starry Magic
  • Trampoline Acrobatics
  • Tight Rope Walking
  • Unicycle Rider
  • Trapeze
  • Rola Bola
  • The Amazing Skills
  • Knife Throwing
  • Mile High Stunt Diver
  • Pony Dancing

A majority of the circus stunts and acts in Go Play Circus Star  were rather fun as well as challenging.  My personal favorites were Knife Throwing and Pie Dodging while my wife had a lot of fun with the Tight Rope Walking and Trampoline Acrobatics.  Unfortunately we did run into some problems with the Wii Remote in some of the stunts.  In Pony Dancing we couldn't get any of the pony's to do the tricks we wanted them to and in the Human Cannonball we had trouble guiding our circus star in the right direction.  Sometime's the directions weren't entirely clear on how to hold the Wii Remote or what you needed to do with it, so the younger crowd may need a bit of help to start out.

Players start off with access to only a handful of these circus events and the rest get unlocked as earn money and buy them.  Money is earned as you participate in each event wowing the audience and gaining fans.  Better performances will earn you huge responses from the crowds while sub-par performances will get a stage full of tomatoes. To help you become a true circus star you also have the chance to fill up a trick meter to perform some crazy death defying stunts  So the more amazing and spectacular you are in your circus stunt the more money you bring in.  Earning money to unlock more events became increasingly fun as the competition heated up as both my wife and I started to become better at each event.

Aside from a few control recognition issues, Go Play Circus Star offers a good amount of family fun.  Some of the circus stunts and acts will take a bit of practice to master, so younger gamers may need some help figuring out the controls.  One feature that would have been nice to see was a character costume customization option.  As cool and kooky as the stock costumes were, I think players would have had a blast being able to come up with off the wall circus outfits. Retailing at $29.99, Go Play Circus Star is a value-priced group game that can entertain both your family and friends.

Overall Score: 8/10

I would like to thank Majesco Entertainment for the review copy of Go Play Circus Star.  Majesco Entertainment is planning on releasing a few more Go Play games later this year, but check back soon as I review the next Go Play game -Go Play Lumberjacks.
