EA Sports Active

There is no doubt that the Wii is the best platform for fitness games, and EA SPORTS brings the latest and best fitness and exercise game to Wii owners in the form of EA SPORTS Active.

The reason EA SPORTS Active is the best fitness and exercise game is because you're not just doing yoga poses, you're busting your butt with more than 25 exercises and sports-inspired drills. You will sweat, burn calories, have fun, and keep coming back for more. If you're getting this game, be prepared to workout!

Aside from the game itself, included in the package is an adjustable leg strap and a resistance band. The leg strap is used to hold the Wii nunchuck to your upper thigh and helps track your movements on-screen.  The resistance band helps increase the intensity of upper body style workouts such as bicep curls and shoulder presses. The resistance band is pretty tough and great for beginners and intermediates, but experts or those who want to really increase their workout intensity can purchase stronger, more tougher bands.  Wii Fit owners can also make use of their balance board as EA SPORTS Active has included exercises designed for the Wii Fit balance board.

The best place to start with EA SPORTS Active is the 30 Day Challenge.  In this mode, users are setup with a virtual personal trainer that motivates them through a wide variety of daily workouts.  As you proceed through these workouts, the total exercise time, reps, and calories burned are displayed and charted so you can see you overall progress.  One of the best features about the 30 Day Challenge mode is that it offers a good variety of exercises.  Aside from providing a total body workout, the variety  of exercises EA SPORTS Active provide also help to keep things fresh. The 30 Day Challenge takes you through some cardio workouts such as running, upper body workouts like lateral raises and bicep curls, and lower body workouts with lunges and squats.

Another great feature is the virtual personal trainer who keeps you motivated with feedback as you perform each exercise.  Aside from continuing to motivate you, your trainer will let you know if you are doing something wrong or not in the right position.  And to help you perform each exercise properly, a video of how to do the workout is presented when you encounter a new routine - this also serves as a good time to rest or take a drink of water.  Remember to stay hydrated!

Outside of the 30 Day Challenge, EA SPORTS Active allows users to select from a list of pre-set workouts, or customize routines to their liking.  These are great options to use if you feel like focusing on certain parts or your body or if you want to squeeze in a quick 5-10 minute workout. I like using this feature on the "rest days" of the 30 Day Challenge, it keeps me motivated to come back for more the next day.

One feature I think will get a lot of use in EA SPORTS Active is the split-screen multiplayer mode.  My wife and I were both excited about this as we could workout together.  Even our 15 month old son was jumping around trying to mimic our moves!

Speaking of children, EA SPORTS Active is great for any family to have.  Instead of paying for multiple gym memberships, each family member can get a customized workout routine based on their difficulty/intensity level.  This is also great for students as well as busy professionals who have schedules that really don't allow them the time to commute to a gym.  Instead of spending 20-40 minutes driving back and forth to the gym you can have a full body workout from the comfort of your own home, whenever you want to.

What I love about EA SPORTS Active is the fact that it pushes you and gives you a great workout while having fun.  And on top of that, the soundtrack and virtual personal trainer do a pretty good job at keeping you motivated and wanting to come back for more.  The variety of exercises allow gamers of all ages and fitness levels to customize an effective routine that fits them and helps everyone stay on track. This really is how a fitness and exercise game should be.  Be prepared to sweat and put your back into each routine - EA SPORTS Active delivers and will give you results.  I would write more, but I have to do more squats and lunges.

Overall score: 10/10

EA SPORTS Active retails for $59.99 is available now.  I would like to thank EA SPORTS for the review copy of EA SPORTS Active.
