Though there has been no official announcement from the Lightning, forward Drew Miller was claimed off waivers earlier today by the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings though do have the announcement posted on their website.
On Tuesday the team placed him on waivers with hopes of him clearing so that they could sent him to Norfolk (he has a 2-way contract) but that didn’t happen as the injury riddled Wings who are in dire need of healthy bodies took the opportunity.
With little cap space, the Wings were able to financially take on his salary to help fill the void with significant injuries to Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Jason Williams. They hope that Miller can add some offensive depth until their return.
Miller is going “home” in that he’s an alumnus of Michigan State University. In fourteen games for the Lightning this season, Miller has zero points.
A sixth-round pick by the Anaheim Ducks in 2003, Miller was trade to the Lightning in August for forward Evgeny Artyukhin this past summer.
