Lili Damita and Warren William
Lili Damita with Warren William in The Match King

Turner Classic Movies winds up it Life in the Depression selection of movies with a half-dozen pre-code films airing between 8 pm and 4:30 am Thursday night, October 29.

This is the one I was waiting for! I've already written in detail about "The Match King" this week over on my Warren William fan site, but my DVR will be lit up on record for the other 5 flicks TCM chooses to air tonight. Lots of bankers, a department store owner, and William, of course, who only seeks to rule the world through a monopoly in matches.

8:00 pm "Faithless" (1932) starring Tallulah Bankhead, Robert Montgomery, Hugh Herbert, D: Harry Beaumont
Bankhead is daughter of a banker gone bust. Broken she even sinks as low as prostitution.

9:30 pm "American Madness" (1932) starring Walter Huston, Pat O'Brien, Kay Johnson, D: Frank Capra
Huston is a kindly bank president battling to survive during the Great Depression.

11:00 pm "Prosperity" (1932) starring Marie Dressler, Polly Moran, Anita Page, D: Sam Wood
Dressler turns bank presidency over to her son (Norman Foster), but inadvertantly causes a run on the bank after taking her money out.

12:30 am "The Crash" (1932) starring Ruth Chatterton, George Brent, Paul Cavanagh, D: William Dieterle
Chatterton uses her charms to gather stock tips for her financier husband (Brent).

1:30 am "Looking Forward" (1933) starring Lewis Stone, Lionel Barrymore, Benita Hume, D: Clarence Brown
Department store owner Stone tries to balance saving his Depression ravaged business and his marriage to faithless Hume.

3:00 am "The Match King" (1932) starring Warren William, Lili Damita, Glenda Farrell, D: Howard Bretherton, William Keighley
Warren William seeks to hold power over the world through his international match monopoly.
