Ah, the famous Bombay Club of D.C. It's named as one of Hillary Clinton's favorite restaurants and is located right by historic K Street. Bombay Club offers gourmet Indian food in the Ayurvedic tradition, an award winning wine list and live music. But in the end, you end up paying for all the bells and whistles of the dining experience and the superb service rather than the food.
The restaurant was a bit too stuffy for me to enjoy Indian food the Indian way -- you know, with my hands -- but the food wasn't bad. Meat is what they do best. The lamb khorma with apricots was unbelievably tender and not too fruity and sweet, and the tandoori chicken was seasoned and grilled perfectly.
However, there were many disappointments. The naan wasn't light, fluffy or warm, the rice was OK (and served in a very small portion), and I was particularly annoyed that you had to order everything a la carte. Nine bucks for four pieces of cold naan? Please. And they garnished my plate with a bit of frisee salad. How very un-Indian.
The worst was the golab jamun for dessert. The dough wasn't soaked all the way through with the sugar sauce, and it was still kind of cold in the middle.
But I won't complain too much, the food was really good, and you can tell they were really using quality ingredients. The Bombay Club certainly doesn't compare to those terrible Indian restaurants at Woodley Park, so I will say that this is by far, my favorite restaurant in D.C.
