I'm pretty snobby about Thai food. My hometown in Southern Calfornia is packed with authentic little hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurants, so I never expect much when I'm on the East Coast, especially when the names of the restaurants are cheesy, like "AppeTHAIzing" or "THAItacular" (two terrible Thai restaurants I've hit up on this side of the coast).
Masaya was delicious. I ordered the tom yum gai, a fragrant, sour and spicy chicken soup flavored with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and red chilies. It's a Thai staple, but Masaya totally passed the authenticity test -- the flavors were strong and they certainly weren't shy with the fish sauce.
When we asked for Sriracha, we got something even better -- a tray of Thai condiments, including sliced Thai red chiles in fish sauce and vinegar and nam prikh jaew (a popular spicy red sauce).
The pad Thai wasn't too sweet, which is usually the case with Westernized Thai restaurants. The Thai tea was delicious, and not too sweet, although I would have liked for it to be served with crushed ice, evaporated milk and tapioca pearls.
