Belle Isle was packed full of people looking to enjoy a relaxing day off of work yesterday, but the paddock parking area was packed full of the top autocross drivers in the area as the Detroit branch of the SCCA held their Memorial Day Solo event.  141 competitors from mostly from the Michigan/Ohio area, as well as few other states, came out for the second event in the local point’s series, and the vehicles ranged from a stock Toyota Yaris to a 2010 Ford Mustang to an ultra rare Noble M400.

It may seem like an odd spread of vehicles, but for those unfamiliar with SCCA Solo racing, virtually any vehicle car can enter and be competitive.   The vehicles are broken into a wide variety of categories based on their performance level, and each driver given a number rather than the car; allowing for multiple drivers to enter and compete in the same vehicle.

The race course itself is comprised of a series of turns, slaloms, and short straights, indicated in the huge parking lot by cones and white lines, and the objective is simple enough…get through the half mile course as fast as possible without going off course, or without hitting any cones; if you knock over a cone, two seconds will be added.  Each driver gets four attempts at the course, and the fastest time after any applicable penalties wins the class.Autocross racing has become more popular around the country, as the course tests every aspect of a vehicle abilities and a driver’s skill.

The low risk of substantial damage to the cars makes it more enticing to owners than other forms of road racing where there are other cars and walls to avoid.  While this course had walls on the perimeter, they were far from the actual racing surface and at no point did any of the cars come near them.  Thanks to the unlikelihood of physical damage (other than some cone marks), the garage area is like a high performance car show, with top sports cars from around the world lined up to hit the track.  You have all of the sports cars that you would expect at an event like this with competitors in Mustangs, Corvettes, M3s, Evolutions, and WRXs - but in this type of racing, small, nimble cars like the Dodge Neon, Honda Civic, and Mazda Miata are common in the field and on the leader board.  (Above, Marcel Victoria's 2008 Subaru WRX)

Any type of vehicle is welcome at the SCCA Solo events, and every class was well represented; from wagons to roadsters, pickup trucks to convertibles, sedans to coupes, vehicles take their turn ripping through the course.  During the day, competitors work as on-track safety during the other classes, setting up cones and radioing to the scoring judge about any cones knocked over during the run.  The competitors were all happy to answer questions about their cars or the event, and being new to an SCCA Solo event I had a ton of them.

Sound interesting?  You don’t need to own a modified sports car to be competitive in the SCCA Solo series, and these events show that racing is more about the driver than the car itself.  All you need is a reliable vehicle, a helmet, and the desire to race through a tight, technical autocross course.

If you are interested in learning more about this type of racing, the Detroit SCCA is sponsoring the Evolution Solo School running June 6-7, 2009, and if you think that you and your vehicle are ready to hit the track, check out the Detroit SCCA Solo schedule as events run throughout the summer and fall.  The next event is June 21, 2009, also on the Belle Isle paddock area and the price to race if you are not an SCCA member is $45 for the day.  For more information on the SCCA Detroit or their events check out detroit-scca.org.  For more pictures of the event, check out the slideshow below the event results!!
