Probably like most new moms, I'm constantly on the hunt for good foods that my baby will enjoy eating rather than smearing on his head.
For the last several weeks, my little one-year old and I have gone to the Costa Mesa Farmer's Market where I pick up fresh fruit and veggies for the family. As I tootle around, I feed my one year old some of the delicious fruit I am buying. The Santa Rosa plums are insane! A Japanese variety, these small, deep-violety purple plums are just bursting with sweet juice, and I literally just take a baby spoon and scoop out soft, ripe flesh and feed it to the boy. He does not want to waste a single drop by smearing it into his hair, instead he opens his mouth wide like a baby bird and gobbles it down. Better still, I have yet to see any diaper issues over the last week from feeding him a plum, (I have my fingers crossed).
Next, I give him a taste of a bright orange apricot. He loves it. I scoop out the jam-like apricot with my spoon and he smacks his little lips. Sometimes he gets impatient and yells that I am too slow with the spoon.
But wait! It's not just the fruit that is so tasty here at this farmer's market. I've discovered the hummus stand! Thank goodness the friendly guy behind the table enticed us to try some. To my surprise, my little guy gobbled down the samples I gave him and asked for more. I had tried feeding my son some hummus I had purchased from Trader Joe's many months ago, even as recently as a few weeks ago, but he would keep spitting it out. Let me tell you, this hummus here at the farmer's market is so delicious and fresh, it tastes nothing like many of the store bought kind that has preservatives in it.
Made by a local company down in San Diego called Baba Foods, there are many different flavors (I think at least a dozen!) to choose from such as Sun Dried Tomato, Roasted Garlic and Artichoke, Sweet Red Pepper, Chipotle, and Kalamata Olive to name a few. Not to mention, your baby will love to nibble on the pillowy soft, freshly baked flatbread with his favorite flavor of hummus. But for you moms, you can't leave here without trying their very popular and delicious Three Layer Appetizer made of feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes and pesto on their pita chips. All tubs sell for four dollars each, or choose three for $10.
