So you've waited until the last possible minute to come up with something for Mother's Day? Well, the day is here but you still have time to pull together a nice day for that special mom in your life. As a mother myself, I can tell you that most of us don't require much to feel appreciated. It's all about acknowledging her hard work.

  1. Get up with the kids. Moms never get to sleep late, and so it really is a treat. Tell mom to sleep as late as she would like and then prepare her something yummy for breakfast (or brunch if she really takes advantage of this offer). If you're not much of a cook then take her out for breakfast. Tell her she gets to be lazy for the rest of the day. It's hard for mom's to do this, so you'll really have to encourage her to take advantage of this opportunity. The kids can help with this.
  2. Plan a day out with the family. My previous article suggested some great places to go for Mother's Day. When mom starts her day, let her know that the family will be spending the day together. This does not have to cost a lot of money. Throw some food in a basket and head to the park. It will be a great day.
  3. Find someone to watch the kids tonight. Go out for a movie and dinner. Time with only grownups is rare for lots of moms, so they are sure to appreciate and evening out. Don't have the funds for both? Find a babysitter and enjoy a night at home. Rent a movie and get some of her favorite snacks. Snuggle together on the couch under a warm blanket and enjoy the evening.
  4. One of the most romantic things you can do for mom is help her around the house. Are there things she's been nagging you about? Tell her that you're hers for the day and get those things done. Another option would be a stack of IOU's that you give her with a nice card that she can cash in later. These can include things like cleaning the bathroom or making dinner.
  5. Is grandma far away? Give her a call. Grandmothers especially love calls from the grandkids. Make plans to celebrate a belated Mother's Day the next time you visit and make sure you don't forget.
