The Phoenix chapter of the Hydrocephalus Association is holding a question and answer session with local attorneys about the unique long-term financial needs of children with hydrocephalus.
Attorneys from the Ledbetter Law Firm will answer questions on subjects such as special needs trusts, living wills and estate planning as they apply to families that include a member with hydrocephalus. One of the attorneys, Clyde Halstead, Esq., has a cousin with hydrocephalus.
The session will be held at the St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center Hospital Cafeteria Conference Room at 350 West Thomas Rd in Phoenix on Saturday July 11th, 2009 from 1-4 p.m.
Many people with hydrocephalus grow to be independent adults with careers and families. Often even their friends don't realize they have the condition. However in some cases, such as Maria's, hydrocephalus can cause severe brain damage and an array of neurological problems which can prevent the person from achieving independence.
It is important the family plan ahead for the child's future financial security, setting up a system to care for the child even after the parents have passed on. An understanding of special needs trusts allows the family to save money for the child without jeopardizing eligibility for state and federal assistance programs such as those offered by DDD.
If your family is affected by hydrocephalus and you are interested in attending, please RSVP by July 3rd by emailing phoenix@hydroassoc.org or calling 520-233-0425. The RSVP may include your specific questions to be answered by the attorneys.
