When I first decided that I was an atheist, I wondered where in St. Louis I could find other people who thought in the same ways I thought. I was tired of holding my tongue or being in the minority, and wanted to find a group who I would not be afraid to share my disbelief with.
Living in St. Louis, it might seem like atheist organizations are hard to find. We don't have buildings dotting the corners of every neighborhood, we don't play bells on Sunday morning, and we're not overly boisterous at the local community center or restaurant.
Yet just under your radar, the atheist community in St. Louis is alive and booming. Take, for example, the local St. Louis Atheists Meetup group, which boasts a membership of over 350 individuals and meets four to six times per month to be social, discuss books we've read, talk about raising children to think critically, and just enjoy the company of others.
Or, you could join the Ethical Society, an organization of humanists who are by and large also atheists.
If you prefer mixed company that is friendly toward atheists, you can try a local Unitarian Universalist church. Either way, you can find plenty of fellowship and community regardless of which organization you call home.
