Last week I reported on an interesting phenomenon on Twitter. “No God” was a trending topic on Twitter as a direct result of a Twitter preacher saying “Know God, Know Peace. No God, No Peace.” The trending topic resulted in a lot of angry Christians and Fail Whales.
Whether it was to satisfy the theists who were constantly complaining about the topic, and therefore increasing its “trendiness”, or to stop the devastating traffic that was crashing Twitter on a consistent basis, Twitter removed “No God” from its trending topics and combined it with the phrase “Know God.” This, of course, produced a lot of tweets with Christians pleased that “Know God” was trending. The turnabout was laughable at best.
However, as a result of the “No God” removal, many atheists cried out that Twitter was censoring them. While I was disappointed that Twitter would remove the trending topic, I suspect that it was most likely done to stop the overwhelming Twitter traffic that was crashing the website. I find it regrettable that they did this by merging “No God” with “Know God”, which simply was in bad taste. It’s no wonder atheists got upset. It’s important to note, though, that the ability to tweet “No God” was not removed, and when you clicked on the “Know God” tag it read, “Know God or No God.” It is also important to remember that Free Speech does not prevent Twitter from censoring its members, it simply protects you from legal action.
In the end, I do not feel that Twitter attempted to censor atheists, but merely handled a website problem in a tasteless way.
