Firehook Bakery is a chain of coffee shops that has eleven locations, two of which lie in Alexandria. Both in Old Town, actually. The Union St. Firehook was the bakery’s first ever location and, according to their own website, had the prestigious honor of once being rated among the top 5 bakeries in the world by W Magazine. The bakery is cozy, offers plenty of seating, and boasts an excellent location: just a block from the river. Proximity to the heart of Old Town and the artsy Torpedo Factory draws a very interesting crowd of Alexandria-celebrity patrons. The Union St. Firehook has an impressive (though, never changing) array of goodies and beautiful salads (though I have yet to be able to pass up something chocolatey in favor of one). Their coffee is well on the good side of decent. They have free wi-fi and a big fireplace. I should be singing their praises but… I had a bad experience.
The Firehook on Union has churned out the occasional cold mocha or burned latte (no one is perfect) but the staff there is usually curt and once asked me to leave placing a loud boombox opposite my laptop and me. Oh and I saw a mouse. There seems to be a mouse, fat and happy, living in the bread baskets by the window. Maybe that bread is for show but it is safe to assume that he is no hermit loner.
