To minimize the risks of an accidental overdose it is important to avoid taking multiple medications with the same active ingredient at the same time. It is YOUR responsibility to review the active ingredients. By law all OTC medicines must have all of their active ingredients listed on the package. For your prescription drugs the active ingredients are listed on the container label. Remember that the active ingredients are the chemicals in the product that allow it to work. Some are single ingredient preparations while others are multi ingredient combinations. You will quickly see how easy it would be to take a remedy for your headache or fever along with a cold remedy and be taking an excessive amount of the active ingredients.

This is the first in a series on recognizing where the active ingredients in over the counter medications are. This one is on Acetaminophen. It is by no means a complete list either. Remember these are only brand name labels. In addition there are countless off brand and generic brands on the shelves as well. READ carefully.
