D.C. sports bar: Kevin Barnes and last week's upset
The Terps are hard to figure. They go out and lose to lowly Middle Tennessee two weeks ago and then promptly step back into Byrd Stadium last Saturday in front of 49,527 rabid fans and throttle a ranked opponent, No. 23 California.
Exactly a week after turning in one of the most embarrassing performances of Ralph Friedgen’s eight years in College Park, the team delivers a pretty sound beatdown to a powerful Pac-10 foe.
Neither result was expected but Maryland will gladly take the win and the momentum.
The Terps cranked up the defensive pressure, tackled like their collective lives depended on it and took advantage of every opportunity that the Golden Bears provided. Even inconsistent quarterback Chris Turner turned his recent incompetence into proficiency, completing 15 of 19 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Da’Rel Scott led the way on the ground for the Terps with a solid 89-yard, two-touchdown performance and Darrius Heyward-Bey turned in a solid game of his own.
The highlight of the game (and maybe the highlight of the season) came late in the second quarter, when Cal quarterback Kevin Riley threw a quick out in the direction of running back Jahvid Best, but cornerback Kevin Barnes leveled Best with an absolutely sick hit. There is no true way to do justice to the magnitude of Barnes’ hit,
so take a look for yourselves.
