Christmas spirit: Washington D.C. sports stars and their foundations
In the Christmas spirit I thought it would be productive and informative to take a look at some of the charitable organizations that are headed by local sports stars. I always donate to the United Way and am becoming more and more passionate about helping those less fortunate, especially at a time like this.
For the next two weeks prior to Christmas, your favorite Sports Examiner (me) will be making every attempt to spread Christmas cheer and bring to light all the positives that sports can bring to our lives – one charity at a time. Certainly beats rambling about Plaxico Burress or Terrell Owens I’d say.
So take a look at the list and let me know if you have ever attended an event hosted by one of these organizations or know of some others I can include. Spreading the word seems to be the least we all can do to support local athletes, well other than buying a jersey or a ticket that is.
First up is Redskins wide receiver Antwaan Randle El’s charitable arm,
The El Foundation. The EL Foundation was created by former Steeler and his brother Curtis because they believe the most effective way to have a positive impact on children is to lead by example. The E stands for Everlasting, the L stands for Love. Everlasting Love. Their vision is “to mold a generation of young leaders who carry on the tradition of supporting their communities with caring and love.”
On Dec. 9 the El Foundation partnered with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation
to host its annual holiday party for hundreds of underserved children in the Washington, DC area.
