Jim Roy was simply one of the best golfers ever to grace that patch of land on Fletcher Avenue affectionately known as "The Claw."
The USF golf course is a landmark and was where Jim Roy spent many hours in his USF days. He graduated in 1982.
Roy is still playing and still has major game. At this past Monday's U.S. Open qualifier in Purchase, N.Y., Roy, a Syracuse native, shot rounds of 72-70 for a 142 total. Great golf for a guy who turns 50 in August. He missed qualifying by a mere four shots.
"I looked around and most of the players are the same age as my kids," Roy recounted. Roy has two sons, both play college golf. Kevin at Long Beach State and Kyle at the University of Tampa.
One player of significance that Roy beat in the two qualifying rounds was newly-crowned PGA Senior champion Michael Allen. Allen shot 143 in his two rounds.
"I saw him there," Roy recounted. "Mike and Buddy Marucci were probably the only two guys older than me," Roy said, laughing.
"Fortunately," Roy continued, "I can still chip and putt."
Even more remarkable is that Roy is a cancer survivor. He had a scare three years ago and is healthy and happy.
Those of us who have inhabited "The Claw" over the years remember Roy as one of the best, a most "memora-Bull."
