According to the BLS' (Bureau of Labor Statistics) Job Openings and Turnover Survey for May 2009 (the most recent month stats are available) there are 2.6 million job openings. Okay, that's great, but what kinds of jobs and in what industries?

The survey found the majority of the the openings were in retail, education, and health. There were 520,000 openings in "professional and business services."

Another disappointing finding of the report is the hires rate was at 3.0 percent in May, which is the lowest point since the series began in December 2000.
