It’s exciting to see social media come of age. It’s even more exciting to be a part of it … but like any worthwhile journey we are not there yet … it will take time for the advertising community to seek and embrace new ways of using social media to their benefit.
At Rethinc we are always endeavoring to steer our clients into new ways of looking at social media as a solution to their marketing needs … we are also trying to figure out how make the perfect martini … but that’s a conversation for another time.
Just for the record … my editor asked for more specificity (and light heartedness) in my writing and for the record the perfect martini can be found at: http://www.furio.tv
Not to play favorites but let’s look at Facebook and just how our friends in the service industry can use it to their advantage.
Now I realize that most of you reading this aren’t dentists … or plumbers … or even landscapers … but each industry would do well to wake up and see the potential that social media … in particular the role Facebook can play in branding your company, retaining clients and attracting new ones.
Think about it … service industries spend billions of dollars every year on client communication intended to keep that client loyal and coming back for more. Guess what … Facebook allows you to do just that … and you can do so more effectively and less expensively than traditional means.
One key to effective Facebook communication is just what my editor told me last week. Be yourself … be light hearted … be entertaining … and stop texting me late at night (ok…ignore that last one). The people you want to be your friends or fans want a compelling interaction with you … they don’t want to be advertised to or lectured at.
The real key that Facebook (and other social media) can do for any industry is personalizing your relationship with your client. (Client is so sterile…let’s call them friends or fans) The other key is providing value and information to said fan/friend so that they have a reason to ‘socialize’ with you.
Here’s how I see it. When I do business with someone I establish whether or not they have a Facebook account. If they don’t … I encourage them to create one … if they refuse I mock them and ostracize them accordingly … maybe even torment their pet with an eating utensil.
I then encourage said client to become my fan or friend on Facebook. I send all of my communications to this client via Facebook. In the case of our dentist he could save the cost of postage by sending your appointment reminders to you via Facebook , cleaning tips on video (that could be shared and branded) and even cosmetic offers as well.
It’s not much different for our friend the plumber … he (or she) could instill loyalty with their customer base and establish expertise in their field by sharing value topics (disposal care, counter top maintenance, bathroom remodeling tips/photos, fixture care, etc.) … this would build brand awareness and keep him top of mind for any work needed.
Finally our landscaper … seems obvious but I’d go ‘before and after’ on some photos while providing watering tips, referral incentives and planting recommendations for various plants that you may want in your particular yard. I might even set up maintenance schedules and special request messages to be sent to me via Facebook.
These are just a few examples of what we might do for you and your company. If you aren’t a dentist … shoot me an email anyway and we can talk. You might feel a little pinch but in the end you will leave looking and feeling a lot better.
As always I welcome your feedback and your ideas. Shoot me an email any time at ed@rethincadvertising.com or better yet come see our new offices next week in downtown Scottsdale … oh and did I mention that there’s a place down the street that makes the perfect martini...? http://www.furio.tv
