The picks, Jim Zorn, Josh McDaniels and Loyalty in the NFL
Jimmy and the ‘Skins
Jim Zorn is getting it from every direction. Joe Theisman is taking pot shots at him and John Riggins has all but dismissed him. Riggo came out and said that Zorn would make a fine high school coach, but he was out of his league trying to coach the big boys. Every football analyst in the media has opined that Dan Snyder will fire Zorn after this year, if not sooner. Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff openly questioned the fitness of some of the Redskin players, (That cracked me up. Have you ever seen a pic of Sonny Jurgensen playing a football game??? Here’s one…just so you know what I am laughing about.)
The master of fitness at work...Sonny Jurgensen
The Redskins themselves are mired in a big puddle of mediocrity that is unbefitting for a team with the talent level that the ‘Skins possess.
The whole Zorn issue seems to have distracted the team. In fact, a few “unnamed” Redskins players came out in the press this week and asked the ‘Skins front office, (read Daniel Snyder), to give Jim Zorn a vote of confidence by openly saying that Zorn will be the coach for at least the rest of the football season. Apparently, if the players knew that Zorn was going to be around for the rest of the season, then they could get back to playing football, rather than worrying about the fate of their beleaguered coach.
I’m sorry, did I actually write “get back to playing football”??? That was a complete typo. A team has to begin playing football to begin with in order to “get back to playing football”.
The 'Skins are 2-2 this season and they have yet to play a team with more than one win. Two one win teams, (Detroit and Carolina), got that win against the ‘Skins. Expect the Chiefs to get into the “W” column when they play Washington on Sunday.
Strike???
I never thought that a strike would improve a sport. The NBA referee strike had the possibility to improve NBA basketball. After all, what group of professional officials has done a worse job over the past few years??? Anyone would be better than that pack of bovines,,,right??? WRONG!!!
The replacement refs are far worse than the real guys. They call fouls on every other possession. I kid you not....every other possession.
The real refs were bad enough when it came to insinuating themselves into games, but these guys are ridiculous.
It has long been known, even by the casual NBA fan, that there are three teams on the floor on any given night and you had to beat them both in order to walk away with a win. These days, you have to be able to beat both teams AND last for the seven hours that it takes to play a basketball game in order to walk away with a win.
The weird thing about this strike is that the people that are striking were not all that good at their jobs to begin with. In fact, some of them were ridiculously bad. The fact that I can't wait for them to get back to work because the alternative is worse is simply testament to the sorrowful condition of the NBA.
I am hoping that the replacements grow into their new role and the fans can look forward to watching some real, no BS, low post banging, no fouls for questionable hand checks, busting chops for position basketball.
OK, I know that it will never happen, because this is the replacement refs fifteen minutes of fame and they are going to have to mug for the cameras as often as they possibly can.
But I can hope....can't I???
the only good thing about this strike is that the time spent waiting for Dick Bavetta to haul his ancient ass up and down the floor has been eliminated from the games.
Here is a video that makes my point for me. It's a bit lengthy with the set up, so just forward to about the middle.
Norman Dale Invades Denver
Did Josh McDaniels go as far as to cultivate the Norman Dale from ‘Hoosiers' image??? I don’t know, but the similarities are striking.
1) The guy comes in from out of town and the team’s best player (Jay Cutler) quits.
2) The team loudmouth, (Brandon Marshall) is dismissed, and then is later allowed back into the fold.
3) After a tumultuous onset, Josh wins over the skeptical town folk by winning games with awesome defense. If we could get Mike Nolan to show up drunk for a couple of games, he could be our Shooter.
Does anyone else see the similarity???
Get Over Yourself
I have heard a lot of noise about how Brett Favre was now dead to Packer Nation because of his over the top touchdown celebrations and the way that he hammed it up with his new team mates on the sidelines during the Monday Night Football game between the Pack and the Vikings.
Really???
You’re telling me that the guy is now dead to you because he did the same things for another team that he did for your team for sixteen years???
Excuse me??? I didn’t quite hear that…you know that my hearing is damaged from listening to the sound of freedom for more than 20 years.
Did you actually say that??? You did??? OK, then like Jules Winnfield….Allow me to retort.
Packer fans like Brett Favre like this.....
As I recall, Favre was shown the door in Green Bay after a 13-3 season, because Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson couldn’t wait to get Aaron Rodgers into the scheme. I also recall Favre making one last attempt to come back to the Packers after he had been shoved out of that door. I further recall that the response that Favre received when he tried to come back was to be traded to the Jets.
Yes, I know that Favre “retired”. I remember the tear riddled press conference. I also remember thinking that he sounded just a little bitter and that there might be a few underlying facts. Since then, it has come to light that Ted Thompson and McCarthy pretty much gave him the boot.
My question to you, Packer Nation is this: Exactly what do you expect from Brett Favre and why do you think that he owes you anything???
The Packer organization showed him no loyalty after he had been an integral part of the machine for sixteen years. So, why should he remain loyal to anything that has to do with the Green Bay Packers???
In 1992, Favre had no choice about where he played football. He was traded to Green Bay and when got the chance to play, he did the best job that he could. You might say that he did that job better than anyone else in the NFL for a number of years. The guy gave everything for your franchise. He played hurt. He overcame addictions. He started more consecutive games than any other QB in the history of the league. You never had to worry about who was going to lead your team for sixteen years. He gave you a title. He gave you a head full of memories. You got what you paid for from the guy.
Now, it is time for you to put yourself in his shoes for a minute and ask yourself this: If the company that I have labored for these many years made it clear to me that I was no longer welcome, would I still be loyal to that company??? Go ahead and think about that for a few minutes, I’ll wait.
You wouldn’t be loyal???
Then why do you expect Favre to remain loyal to you??? Grow up and get over yourselves. The NFL is a business and Favre is a professional football player. The operative word here is professional. As long as a professional football team is willing to pay him to throw a football, he has the right to play with that team.
The Packers organization wasn’t going to pay him to be your quarterback, so why shouldn’t he go to Minnesota???
Because Minnesota is your arch rival??? Please.
Much more than they like him like this. This way he is dead to them.
The other facet of this situation is this: when you are rooting for an NFL team, you are essentially rooting for your laundry and a corporate logo.
There is no loyalty in the NFL, other than amongst the fans.
In the league, there is only can you perform and what have you done for me lately???
Management will kick a player to the curb in a hot minute if he cannot perform at an acceptable level and players will jump ship in a second for a bigger better deal with another team.
Only the fans stay loyal. Everyone else is simply trying to get paid.
So, don’t expect players to be loyal to you. This is their job and they have a very small window in which to be successful at it. Your feelings concerning what a player might do, or where he might go are not going to enter into his thought process at all.
So, have solidarity among yourselves as fans. Take pro football for what it is…entertainment. Know that your buddy is going to be right next to you rooting for your team next year, whether either one of you recognizes the faces and the names on that team or not.
