Texas, McShay and Boise State, TO, The LCS and JaMarcus Russell
Here it is October.
October, the month that the NHL gets rolling, the NBA goes into its preseason, the MLB is getting ready to start its LCS series and there is more football than you can shake a stick at.
And I have writers block.
Seriously, there is nothing going on right now that intrigues me enough to sit down and devote three to six hours of my life to writing about it. There is nothing that has gotten those righteous anger juices flowing the way that college football polls, (pre-season, BCS and otherwise) do every year.
There has been only one thing this week that has even come close:
That was listening to Texas head football coach Mack Brown say that it was too early to start worrying about polls. That cracked me up. Mack Brown never has to worry about polls. The pollsters love Texas as one of the favored children each season and make sure that the Longhorns are in the mix if it can be justified in the most remote sense.
I will give it to Mack….Texas did get housed by the BCS last year when the BCS ranked OU above Texas, thus making the Sooners the de facto Big 12 South champions. It was a slight to say the least, but the thing that Brown has to realize is that even though Texas is a favored child, Oklahoma is more favored. And in the popularity contest that is the BCS and college football in general, Bob Stoops and the OU squad are always going to be picked over Texas when the panel of distinguished judges that makes up the BCS gets to make the decision.
I take that back:
There is one other tidbit that I picked up that made my blood boil.
Todd McShay was on national television this morning spewing inanities about how he would like to see a one loss team, (or four), from bigger conferences ranked ahead of Boise State when the first BCS poll comes out next week.
Really, Todd??? Really???
What do those kids from Boise have to do get some love???? They clean their rooms. They eat everything on their plates. They bring home good grades. They attend to their personal hygiene. They say Yes Sir, No Sir, Yes Ma’am and No Ma’am. They are members in good standing of the glee club, the 4H, the Boy Scouts of America and the FFA. They say their prayers and go to mass or attend a protestant service. Oh yeah….and they beat any team that lines up against them. That includes the Oklahomas and the Oregons of this world.
Exactly what in hell do these kids have to do get some freakin’ love around here???
Okay, now that I am on a roll, let’s look at a couple of other issues that singe my sack.
Is it over yet???
Can anyone tell me why there was a baseball game in Denver on Sunday night??? I am dying to know what the justification for having a pastoral “summer” game played in sub freezing temperatures is. There can’t be any justification at all. The baseball season is simply too long. There is no earthly reason that it should take almost seven and a half months and an upwards of 180 games, (for the two World Series teams), to figure out who the best team in baseball is. Shorten the regular season to 120 games and let’s be done with this thing by the end of September.
The NBA, the NHL and NASCAR might want to think along the same lines. By the time that June rolls around, who really gives two spits in a shoe about who is going to win the Stanley Cup??? Maybe if the issue was decided by the middle of April when it is still cool outside, folks would pay attention.
The NFL trade rumor mill:
While we’re on the subject of things that aggravate me, let’s talk about my favorite athlete in the entire world, Terrell Owens. Word around the campfire is that TO might be on the trade block. Word is that he might be headed to Chicago. Wouldn’t that be lovely???
I honestly cannot even begin to imagine Chicago going after this trade. The Bears have just given away a significant chunk of their next two drafts to acquire a franchise quarterback to build their offense around. They seem to be well on their way to doing just that. So why in the world would they bring in a 35 year old head case with a history of derailing quarterbacks??? It makes absolutely no sense. If I were the Bears, I’d let Johnny Knox and Devin Hester develop. The last thing that I would do is bring in the NFL’s answer to Courtney Love.
Hell, I couldn’t believe that the Bills signed him.
Bustdog Millionaires Revisited:
Seeing as this has evolved into an article that revisits some of my other hot buttons, let’s talk about the latest and greatest bust…. JaMarcus Russell.
As a Bronco fan, I like to see the Raiders wallowing in the depths of squalor and desperation. I like to see that more than anyone. I especially like to bore ass my buddies Ed and Joel, (both hard core Raider fans from the East Bay), about the wretchedness of the franchise and its slap nuts crazy owner. I simply love to see the Raiders struggle.
But no franchise deserves to have to pay a JaMarcus Russell the kind of money that JaMarcus has coming to him. The guy is a train wreck. It’s that simple. Russell has no business as an NFL quarterback. The only way that I see the Raiders getting anything out of this at all is to take advantage of his size, (speed might be an issue), and move him to linebacker.
I can completely understand why Russell’s agent kept him out of his rookie training camp. If he would have shown up and the Raiders would have been able to see what they were negotiating for before a deal was done; JaMarcus would be playing in the UFL, rather than taking the Raiders franchise to new depths.
To this day, I do not understand why every professional sports league does not have a rookie / second year pay structure where every player that enters the league makes the same amount of money. The NBA has a pay structure based on draft position, but it is still not sufficient to ensure that duds are weeded out before they get paid a metric ass ton of guaranteed money that the owners and the league have to recoup via inflated ticket and merchandise prices.
My Shame:
I have given up picking college football games against the spread in 2009. I can’t get it right. I was going to soldier through and keep plugging. But after last weeks debacle put me at dead even on my picks for the season, I decided that I couldn’t fall below .500, so I am simply going to pick winners from here on out.
This week’s winners are:
Texas over Oklahoma, Wisconsin over Iowa (upset), Virginia over Maryland, Central Michigan over Western Michigan, Alabama over South Carolina, USC over Notre Dame, UCLA over Cal (upset) and Mizzou over Oklahoma State (upset).
My big upset pick is Georgia Tech over Virginia Tech.
As usual, thanks for stopping by and reading this tripe.
Peace
