Nov 6, 2009, Friday - Rita "La Guera" Figueroa co-headlined Windy City Fight Night 7 at the UIC Pavillion. Figueroa and her opponent Kita Watkins put on an exciting match. Figeuroa was knocked down early in the fight, but came back strong and seemed healthy leaving the ring.
In her dressing room Figueroa complained of a headache and began feeling nauseous. Symptoms worsened and her team contacted her neurosurgeon and the paramedics standing by. Figueroa's team should be lauded for recognizing that the situation was serious and insisting that she be taken immediately to UIC Medical Center where a neurosurgeon was waiting to diagnose her.
The initial CAT Scan showed bleeding and Figueroa was taken to surgery instantly.
The fact that over twenty friends and relatives awaited results patiently in the waiting room during the three hours Figueroa was in the OR is a tribute to her as an individual.
Surgery was successful. A torn vein on the outside of the brain was located and her surgeon stated that it was consistent with head injury sustained while boxing. The vein was taken care of and no other brain trauma was present. Doctors stated that Figueroa was lucid following surgery and although the next few days of recovery are critical, she is expected to recover fully.
Rita Figueroa is a well-known and liked personality in the Chicago boxing community. The boxing community as well as her family at Degerberg Academy, where she is a third degree black belt, will be keeping her and her family in their thoughts and wishing her a swift recovery.
