Just over a month after Andy Roddick’s devastating loss in the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer, Roddick suffered another heartbreaking defeat in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Sunday.
Andy Roddick’s opponent was young Argentine Juan del Potro, currently ranked 6th in the ATP. Roddick boasts the best serve in the game, while Del Potro has possibly the best return game in tennis.
The first set Roddick came out very strong, serving well and not surrendering any easy points to Del Potro. Roddick ran away with the opening set 6-3. But as the match progressed Del Potro became more aggressive, and a late break in the second set gave him a 7-5 victory.
The third and final set did not cease to thrill anyone. The set featured Juan del Potro swinging away, taking aggressive strokes and capitalizing on Roddick’s mistakes. After the match, Roddick said about Del Potro, "He was taking big cuts, especially for the last 30, 45 minutes
we were out there, and he was connecting."
They pushed each other to a tiebreaker in the final set, and a back and forth tiebreak ended with a cross-court forehand winner for Del Potro. But rather than Roddick congratulating Del Potro, Roddick lifted his finger and challenged the call on the line. The fate of the match was left to the Shotspot reading.
"I actually thought it might have been out, and I asked him and he said it might have been out," Roddick said.
The Jumbo-Tron said otherwise. The shot was good, and Juan del Potro won his second straight Legg Mason Tennis Classic.
