Now, instead of writing or reading about art, it is time to show us all what YOU can do! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is practically giving away money to interested artists who send in original design proposals for bicycle racks scheduled for fabrication and installment in downtown Nashville and adjacent neighborhoods in Spring 2010. From this very moment until 3pm, November 18th, 2009, you may have a chance to receive an allocated budget of $2,500 per design if you send in a proposal and it is accepted.

Odds are you have a fairly good shot at being selected. There will be five different design proposals for bike racks chosen and multiples of some of the designs will then be built for the numerous locations around the city plotted out thereafter. Heck fire, to make things even better for your chances, Metro has even allowed up to three design proposals that can be submitted from the same artist. To me that sounds like a lot better odds than getting the Powerball numbers in line or having Ed McMahon’s smiling successor showing up at your door with a Billy Madison-size check.

Don’t get me wrong, like purchasing artwork, just any design won’t do. To drop a few hints at what the city wants, here’s a few clues. The winning ideas should be low on maintenance but high on durability, safety, functionality and aesthetic merit. On top of that, each artist needs to have a sound ability to work hand and hand and well with other design professionals and metro staff members.

If this sounds like a project for you or anyone that you know would be interested, please send them this story … and the information below. It may take a village to raise a baby, but it only takes one creative mind at a time to make a little money by drawing ideas about bike racks. At least that’s what I think. What do you think?

For more information:

Please send any question related to this project via email only and with “Bike Rack” in subject line to:

arts@nashville.gov

Then, after looking at and following all of the submission requirements, please mail your designs to:

Metro Arts Commission

P.O. Box 196300

Nashville , TN 37219

Or for UPS, FEDEX, etc. to:

Metro Arts Commission

800 2nd Avenue South , 4th Floor

Nashville , TN 37210

Again, the Submission deadline is:

All must be received no later than 3 pm, Wednesday, November 18, 2009, CDT.
