Georgia O'Keefe

Actually, if you were to ever watch a show of  Lifetime channel-let’s say in the last month on a random Saturday night because there was no sporting event of interest on, no art opening to attend, and/or your wife was successful in stealing the remote control at just the exact moment that the premier special first aired-then you might have caught a glimpse into the world of one of the best-known U.S. painters in the past century, Georgia O’Keeffe. Yes, you guessed it; I sat through the aforementioned biopic and by chance (or design depending on who you watch it with) discovered many interesting tidbits that compelled me to learn more about Georgia O’Keeffe behind her famous paintings.

Oddly enough, I did a little bit of research and didn’t have to dig too far at all to find out that the Frist Center for the Visual Arts was soon going to be providing me-as well as anyone wanting to come inside their historical and always inviting doors-with the opportunity to hear and learn a great deal more about Georgia O’Keeffe and her life in person, without having to stare at the Lifetime channel any longer (I have a close eye on the remote control as I type). This Friday, at high noon sharp, the Frist freely invites any and everyone who would like to discover or rediscover the significance of Georgia O’Keeffe’s imagery and art to hear Barbara Buhler Lynes, curator at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Emily Fisher Landau Director at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center, give a lecture which will focus on just how important O’Keeffe’s own image played into the popularity and understanding of the artist’s work. Yes, I said it; the lecture is free of charge to attend! It’s the perfect appetizer for your lunch break and art-filled weekend.

The lecture, Georgia O’Keeffe: Photography and an American Icon, will also include aspects of portraits taken by other famous artists such as Yosuf Karsh, Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams and more  that will serve as the ideal complement to the Frist’s ongoing exhibit Georgia O’Keeffe and Her Times. So come on down to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts during your lunch break tomorrow and bring your art appetite in tow. You won’t leave empty-handed if good art for is what you are hungry for when dealing with the Frist. They are Nashville’s own art soup for the soul. Enjoy!
