Working with Clay.  Swain & Brunton. 2009.

Normally I get kinda perturbed when I actually DO listen to the radio AND by chance hear the DJ of the moment act as if they have just invented a new vocabulary word and introduced an unknown excitement into my world when “Rocktober” has arrived, but this weekend’s Nashville art scene at magpie etc. will definitely put the rock in YOUR October. Okay, maybe not so much rock, but the musical styling of local favorite Venus Hum is coming back together and back home with a new CD, their fourth record, called Mechanics & Mathematics, that continues to marry pop songs with strange electronic sounds sure to keep your toes tapping and your heart warm in the changing weather. A few hours before they hit the stage at The Rutledge for Next Big Nashville this Friday, Oct. 9, Annette, Tony and Kip are going to celebrate their much awaited latest CD with a very special acoustic show and CD listening party from 6-8pm at magpie etc.

Not ones to ever stop sharing the talents of friends or slow down the momentum of a good thing, magpie etc. proprietors Rhiannon Guillet and Emily Harper Beard look to follow-up Friday’s Venus Hum magical showdown with an art exhibition Saturday with the nicest, most talented combo I know. magpie etc. is proud to present Works with Clay; a public opening reception this Saturday, from 5-8pm joining the ceramic works of Rosemary Swain with her bestest friend and graphic artist Clay Brunton to reveal unique pairings of two and three dimensional designs. Before meeting Clay, Swain received her BFA in ceramics from Western Kentucky University and followed that with an internship at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts where she spent her nights developing her clay techniques. Brunton, also graduating from Western Kentucky University, honed his graphic design skills at school and as a print maker while helping start the graphic design studio, art gallery, and screen printing shop called Powerhouse Factories in Cincinnati, OH. Brunton is now a screen printer for Stuph Clothing Inc. and creating more work than ever before in his own studio of sorts. Together, Clay and Rosemary will knock your socks off with their down to Earth personalities and out of this world creativity.

Together, Rhiannon and Emily have created a wonderful weekend of events so you don’t have to worry about what to do. Whether you fancy music or art, magpie etc. is providing you with the best of both. It’s not a tough decision when you actually think about it. My advice … don’t think, just show up!
